Artist Statement
Self-Portrait is a steel monument that primarily addresses my own negative feelings of my sexuality and the joking exterior peeling away to show the cold interior; represented by the colorful paint tearing away to reveal the metal beneath. The sculpture has been abstracted from a proper phallus so to increase the ambiguity and the number of possible readings. Self-Portrait would be erected in Las Vegas, thus creating a parallel between my sexuality and the social state of Las Vegas. The piece then becomes a portrait of Vegas as well, also known as "Sin City".
