The objective is to experiment with methods of applying marks. In positioning myself behind the canvas I eliminate the control one maintains while painting. I am both lacking sight, and the use of my hands. Different lengths of tubing also influence the probability of making certain color marks on the canvas. Feeding ink through the tubing to saturate the rags should provide a consistent supply of ink to dictate the duration of the performance.

Larger Than Life Cup

The larger than life cup will be made of handmade paper
made by me. The cup will be seven feet tall. Inside the cup is
a motor and a disk attached to the motor that will move around.
The disk will have a little like attached to it. The movement of the
disk will move the light around inside the cup. This light movement
will look like the movement of water in a glass. The paper circles
above the cup will represent carbonation coming from the illusion
of liquid in the cup. The bubbles will be made of paper made by
me and attached to a black rod. The entirety of the installation
will be placed inside a small black room where viewers can have
a close and personal experience with sculpture.

The original idea of lightbulb and lampshade came from a woodwork project for which a found object was being mutated. The wood sculpture piece-an angular lampshade-was unsuccessful due to mistakes of measurement. I decided to continue this idea for the Transmutation project. Out of several sketches I chose the idea of a lampshade that doesn't cover the light underneath. To further challenge my skill I want the lampshade to make an umbrella-like motion. In the finished piece the lampshade should flip up the moment the lightbulb lights up.

This project was initially meant to be viewed in a small room. The concept is to represent time in a more ephemeral way than a clock. The lazer light is used as a metaphor for time.

Outreaching Limb

In full-scale project the "Outreaching Limb" will be made out of aluminum or steel and it would be mounted to the wall. The object will be about 25 to 30 feet long and it would be just hovering over the ground.

Artist Statement

Self-Portrait is a steel monument that primarily addresses my own negative feelings of my sexuality and the joking exterior peeling away to show the cold interior; represented by the colorful paint tearing away to reveal the metal beneath. The sculpture has been abstracted from a proper phallus so to increase the ambiguity and the number of possible readings. Self-Portrait would be erected in Las Vegas, thus creating a parallel between my sexuality and the social state of Las Vegas. The piece then becomes a portrait of Vegas as well, also known as "Sin City".

In its ideal form, this project was envisioned as a video/performance art piece. Nude except for clothing made of pieces of stuffed animals, with a furry, phallic object attached to my groin, I would move through private spaces (such as bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, etc.) and interact with the space on film. I would "become" this different person, covered by the wearable sculpture, and interact with the space according to the desires and attractions of the creature that I seem to be.

In this piece, I was thinking a lot about issues of sexuality. I thought about how society's views about us as sexual beings - and how that conflicts with our real sexual identity - can destroy us, in a way. I thought a lot about the feminist interpretation of the "Madonna-whore complex" and the way in which that restricts women as sexual beings, making sex and sexuality simultaneously the most interesting and the most disgusting things about a person. Having to hide who you are; having to escape from what you want in order to be accepted.

This project has changed in form and in nature, but not in substance!

Due to a lack of time left in the semester, you will no longer be required to “fully realize” your ideas relating to transmutation. You are, however, required to realize them “enough”.

What does this mean??

Consider yourself no longer restricted by the lack of time, energy and materials that would be required to construct your ideas in a 3-dimensional form, or at full scale. You now have the freedom to dream. What would you want to make if you had access to unlimited resources?

This does not necessarily mean you should abandon your previous ideas completely, but rather expand upon them (obviously there was something about those ideas that interests you…try to figure out what that something is). Imagine the perfect solution to this project, and propose it.

With what medium do you feel most comfortable communicating your ideas?

Your final proposal must be a creative product with strong imaginative or aesthetic appeal. It may take the form of a drawing, painting, collage, model, sculpture, or any other manifestation you think would be suitable. Therefore, do not hand in your first sketch. Spend much time brainstorming before deciding upon the best solution.

My wallflower was made with a mixture of materials. The flower petals are made from metal wire, then I used stockings to stretch over the metal frame. The pollen is made from latex gloves.

For my performance, I crept along the walls dancing solo, and refusing to dance with any gentlemen that asked to dance with me.

I took on the persona of a dinosaur/dragon-type creature (design based on a pre-existing dragon character of mine) and walked around as such. I would act curious at first seeing someone new then, depending on their reaction, would decide whether I would continue to interact with them (friend or foe? wait to be pet or dance with them? etc) or run away elsewhere [and try again]. I tried to keep the skull-hat at eye level with others.

For the most part, this wearable sculpture left me unable to see or speak to others, forcing me to engage with others through touch. By using soft materials such as faux fur and sweater fabric, I hoped to create a layer of textures pleasing to the touch, to make myself an inviting "creature" to communicate with in a physical way.

The major concept of this project was to remove my sight and replace it with a long, seven foot antenna, which I would use to navigate the dance party. I also assumed the persona of a strange creature that was easily fascinated by anything that its antenna could touch, dictating my interactions with others.

For this assignment you will be expected to “mutate” an existing object or group of objects in three distinct phases. The mold making and casting techniques taught in this class should be used in at least one of those steps. You are strongly encouraged to begin working on this assignment without having planned or predicted your final result. Think of each phase as a separate experiment, and let the results from the previous stage determine your next course of action. Work progressively and intuitively.

These projects should be installed in the sculpture gallery, cell space or sculpture “box” by the afternoon of their due date for a group critique. You must decide if your final object is a table-top, floor-standing or wall-mounted sculpture, and display it accordingly. The use of a white pedestal is forbidden for this assignment.

The intent of this assignment is to teach you some very basic information about plaster and silicon mold-making, as well as life-casting with plaster gauze. Your goal should be to learn how to properly make a two-part plaster mold and avoid undercuts, and to familiarize yourself with the many different materials that can be used for casting, such as plaster, wax, soap, sugar, and anything else that can change from soft to hard (cake batter?).

The focus of this project is on both the craft and content of your final object, and the way in which it is displayed. Pay attention to the details!

You will be supplied with mold clay, plaster, silicon, wax and plaster gauze. You will be required to supply any other materials you think are necessary for your individual project.

Suggestions and things to consider:

First: choose an object (or small group of objects) that you’d like to “mutate”.

Second: Choose to either make a mold and cast that object in a new material, or to mutate it in some way. Suggested mutation techniques: wrapping, carving, bending, deconstructing, combining, stacking, dissecting, smashing, disfiguring, sanding or wearing away, melting, etc.

Third: If you made a mold as your second step, now is the time to mutate, or vice versa.

Fourth: Repeat step two.

Fifth: Now decide how you will display this object (or group of objects). Consider its scale. Should it be on the floor, hanging on a wall (or sitting on a shelf on the wall), or resting on another object such as a table?

(Note: mold making and casting are one phase. They will not be considered two separate phases!)

This project is due in three weeks! One phase must be completed each week!

Turner Gallery Exhibition: Wearable Sculpture and Performance

Due Friday, October 30th

Your assignment is to make a wearable sculpture that will be worn for the duration of the exhibition in the Turner Gallery on October 30th. Your performance of the object (your movement and behavior while wearing it) will be just as important as the craft of the object itself, and will account for 50% of your grade for this project. Do not let the performance become an afterthought; consider it as a main element of your design.

Other than being worn on your body, your sculpture may also incorporate the performance environment and invite audience participation. Don’t forget: this will be a dance party! There will be loud music, dim lighting and potentially lots of people. How will your sculpture be designed for such an environment? How can your everyday perception or opinion of college dance parties play a role in that design?

The intent of this assignment is to teach you some very basic soft sculpture techniques, including paper-making (stretching paper over a metal armature) and sewing. You will be required to incorporate at least one sewn fabric element into your project. You are also welcome to incorporate other techniques or processes into your sculpture, such as felting, knitting, crocheting, or paper mache.

Available tools and materials: sewing machines and supplies, hand sewing needles and thread, batting for stuffed elements, 1/4” steel round stock for welded armatures, pliable aluminum armature wire, chicken wire, plaster gauze, abaca paper pulp.

Suggestions and things to consider:

Object. You are wearing the sculpture. Therefore, YOU are essentially “the object”. Do you want people to see or recognize you? Is your persona/sex/race important? Are you terrified of performing? If so, consider covering your face or collaborating with your fellow classmates.

Form. How will the object’s form encourage or prevent a particular kind of movement? Will you be able to move on your own or will participants need to assist you in some way?

Scale. Keep in mind that there will be 25 students/performers in the room, not including the audience. The space may get crowded, especially if it becomes a successful dance party.

Space. How will the object interact with the space and everything occurring around it? Is it designed for a specific part of the room? Is a part of the space altered in preparation for or during that interaction? Does it create its own sense of space in some way?

Remember… this piece will be part of a public exhibition. Take it seriously.
